About Us

Like many of the coolest restaurants, this vegan bar and restaurant started out as a street food stall called Indie Veggie. It toured the UK and catered at festivals, fayres, private parties and weddings. Having built a cult following, charismatic plant-food champion, Sandeep Kanabar, established Karibu bar and restaurant as his first permanent spot.

The international plant-based cuisine draws on his Kenyan childhood: home-style food, cooked from family recipes. It’s also inspired by his travels across Asia and through South America to create a menu that has enthralled diners since it’s inception with a diverse mix of international favourites – all focused on putting fresh, seasonal and locally sourced products first. Our alcohol and treats are local too. For example, the craft beers are sourced from Stroud Brewery and gin from Sibling Distillery.

Sandeep is an eco-conscious foody so it’s no surprise that Karibu embodies a positive eco-conscious ethos he encourages everyone to get behind. It showcases beautiful canvas designs from talented local artists who save our land fills by turning unwanted materials into art. The canvas designs complement the African influences and Indian themes that loom large in the decor with lots of fabrics, colours and textures. It also used reclaimed materials for its fixtures, recycles waste and uses biodegradable packaging where possible.

“Karibu” is a Swahili word for Welcome and with enthusiastic staff who are eager to please, you’ll always feel welcome here.

You can get to us by crossing the road at the top of the High Street, and then taking a 1 minute walk up Nelson Street where we are found on the right hand side opposite Qs Tattoos.
